Sclerotherapy was developed over 75 years ago and is presently one of the most prevalent treatments for the treatment of spider veins of the legs. During treatment a solution similar to salt water is injected into the vein using a very tiny needle. Treatment sessions can take from 15 to 45 minutes depending on the number of veins treated in a particular session. Upon injection the solution replaces the blood in the vein generating a mild irritation and causing eventual disappearance of the walls of the blood vessels. The body then initiates the natural healing process and the vein eventually disappears over the course of numerous weeks. Gradual improvement will be noticed over the course of one or more sessions.
Spider veins often result form pregnancy, prolonged standing in one position on hard surface floors, oral contraceptives and genetic factors. The spider veins tend to become more prominent with aging and can also appear in other areas of the body such as the face and chest.
Mild discomfort is associated with the treatment, however no anesthesia is required. Post treatment most patients will wear support stockings for one to two days and restrict exercise during this time period. It is also advisable to avoid direct sun exposure to the areas injected until temporary discoloration is resolved.
