There are currently surgical and non-surgical treatments for restoring natural looking hair. Rogaine (Minoxidil) is an over-the-counter product that has been shown to effectively slow the rate of hair loss and in some conditions actually grow hair. An oral medication called Propecia has been shown to be slightly more effective. Perhaps one of the most common forms of hair restoration, however, is hair transplant surgery. Hair transplantation is a surgical office procedure in which hair from normal regions of the scalp such as the back and sides is moved to the thinner regions of the front of the scalp. By using a local anesthetic, mini grafts are taken from the back of the scalp and transplanted to the frontal area. Typically sessions are spaced three months apart and most patients will complete the hair restoration process in four or more sessions. Most procedures take approximately two to three hours and are done in the physician’s office. Most patients will resume their normal activities within two to three days after the transplant session.
Hair transplantation is a permanent solution to hair loss. With advanced surgical techniques, mini and micro grafts are used to create a very natural hairline.
