SURGICAL PROCEDURES: More About Liposuction
Pain
Does liposuction hurt?
There are a variety of anesthetics that can be used for liposuction. Your surgeon will describe all the options available to you for a safe, pain-free procedure. In general, local anesthesia can be used for procedures involving small amounts of fat and limited body areas. You can also choose to be sedated during the procedure for maximum comfort and relaxation. For more extensive procedures, your surgeon may recommend a regional anesthetic, such as an epidural or spinal block. Many patients prefer general anesthesia, particularly if a large volume of fat is being removed. Whichever method of anesthesia is used, the most pain you'll feel should be the pinprick of the anesthetic injection. After surgery, you will probably experience some pain, burning, swelling, bleeding, temporary numbness and general discomfort. Your surgeon can prescribe a painkiller to help you rest and sleep. It's perfectly normal to feel stiff, sore and bruised for several days after your surgery.
