SURGICAL PROCEDURES: More About Liposuction
Liposuction: Preparing for Surgery
How do I prepare for liposuction?
Your initial surgical consultation will include an evaluation of your overall health and an assessment of your fat deposits and the condition of your skin. As you discuss your desires and expectations, be totally honest with your surgeon, so that he or she can make the most informed decision as to the best technique for your needs. From there, your surgeon will describe the procedure in detail and explain any risks and limitations.
Your surgeon will also give you specific instructions on how to prepare for surgery including guidelines for eating and drinking, smoking and taking or avoiding vitamins, supplements and certain medications. Make sure you have someone who can drive you home after your surgery and help you at home for a day or two. If you develop an infection of any kind, especially a skin or respiratory infection, your surgeon may postpone your surgery. While it's rarely necessary, your surgeon may also recommend having blood drawn ahead of time, in case it is required during surgery.
Where will I have my surgery?
Depending on your individual needs, your liposuction may be performed in a surgeon's office, a surgery center or in a hospital. Smaller liposuction procedures are usually done on an outpatient basis while more extensive surgeries usually require an overnight stay in a hospital or nursing facility.
